The Brontës in Brussels is a lavishly-illustrated guide to Charlotte and Emily Brontë’s time at the Pensionnat Heger in Brussels, where Charlotte spent two years (1842-43) and Emily just under one.
For both sisters, their time at the Pensionnat being taught by the charismatic Constantin Heger was an opportunity to improve their French and German. For Charlotte, who stayed on as a teacher at the school, it meant much more than this. Having fallen in love with Heger, she left with a broken heart and the inspiration for two novels, The Professor and Villette.

Helen MacEwan’s book draws on Charlotte’s letters and novels to take a look at a formative period in the lives of two great writers, while painting a picture of the capital city that gave the sisters a taste of urban and continental life. It includes some of their essays they wrote for Heger and the complete text of the emotional letters Charlotte wrote to her tutor after leaving Brussels.
The Brontës in Brussels is also on display at Hatchards in Piccadilly.
